Notes/Trivia:
  • Frank Rooney's short story The Cyclists' Raid was originally published in Harper's Magazine in 1951 and later anthologized in "The Best American Short Stories 1952". Rooney's story was inspired by the sensationalistic media coverage of an American Motorcyclist Association motorcycle rally that got out of hand on the Fourth of July weekend in 1947 in Hollister, California. The overcrowding, drinking and street stunting were given national attention in Life Magazine and would become known as the "Hollister riot".
  • Uncredited performances include Richard Farnsworth and, as one of Johnny's gang, Jerry Paris, best known as neighbor Jerry Helper on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
  • Considered the original "outlaw biker" film, and the first movie to examine American outlaw motorcycle gang violence.
  • In the United Kingdom, the film was banned by the British Board of Film Censors for fourteen years.
  • Marlon Brando's portrayal of Johnny has become an iconic image of both motorcycle culture and 1950s "rebellious" youth. His long sideburns also inspired a craze.
