  • Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song ("Hopelessly Devoted to You").
  • Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy, Actor - Musical/Comedy (Travolta), Actress - Musical/Comedy (Newton-John) and Original Song ("Grease" and "You're the One that I Want").

  • Grease made its Broadway debut in 1972 and, after over 3,000 performances ending in 1980, was the then-longest running musical in Broadway history; it is currently Broadway's 15th longest-running show. The original cast included Adrienne Barbeau, Walter Bobbie, Barry Bostwick and Jeff Conaway (who would play Kenickie in the film). Later cast members included Peter Gallagher, Richard Gere, Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, David Paymer, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta (Danny in the film), Michael Tucci (Sonny in the film), Treat Williams, Jerry Zaks and Adrian Zmed (who would go on to co-star in the sequel Grease 2). It was nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
  • Grease went on to become a West End hit in 1973, with a then-unknown Richard Gere as Danny. There were three London revivals, in 1979, 1993 and 2007.
  • With its large cast of young characters, the stage musical Grease has become a staple of regional theater, summer stock, community theater and high school drama groups, often using a more sanitized script (for example, the complete elimination of Rizzo's pregnancy subplot).
  • In addition to relegating several of the musical's original songs to background music and adding four new songs ("Grease", "Hopelessly Devoted to You", "Sandy" and "You're the One That I Want"), other changes from stage to screen include renaming Sandy Dumbrowski to Sandy Olsen (due to the casting of Australian singer Olivia Newton-John) and changing the name of the greaser gang from the Burger House Boys to the T-Birds. In the stage play, the song "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" had a reference to Sal Mineo, who was murdered in 1976. For the movie, the lyric was changed to reference Elvis Presley, who died the same day the scene was filmed.
  • Casting Call: Lucie Arnaz, Susan Dey, Carrie Fisher, Elvis Presley, Harry Reems, Henry Winkler and Lorna Luft, who went on to co-star in Grease 2.
  • The highest-grossing movie of 1978, and the then-third highest-grossing movie of all time.
  • The Grease soundtrack album ended 1978 as the second-best selling album of the year in the United States, behind the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever, another film starring John Travolta. The album spawned three hit singles, "Grease", "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want".
  • "The Grease Megamix", a medley of "You're The One That I Want", "Greased Lightnin'" and "Summer Nights", was released in 1990 in conjunction with the film's video release.
  • There were two popular Broadway revivals of Grease. The first, in 1994, starred Sam Harris, Marcia Lewis, Billy Porter, Hunter Foster, Megan Mullally and, somewhat controversially, Rosie O'Donnell as Rizzo. Later cast members included Linda Blair, Debbie Boone, Chubby Checker, Jeff Conaway, Micky Dolenz, Sheena Easton, Joely Fisher, Sutton Foster, Debbie Gibson, Dody Goodman, Jasmine Guy, Jennifer Holliday, Al Jarreau, Lucy Lawless, Darlene Love, Maureen McCormick, Mackenzie Phillips, Joe Piscopo, Sherie Rene Scott, Jon Secada, Brooke Shields, Sally Struthers, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Jo Anne Worley and Adrian Zmed. It was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.
  • The second Broadway revival, in 2007, was preceded by the American Idol-style reality competition series Grease: You're the One that I Want!, with the winners cast as Danny and Sandy. It too was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical and featured, for the first time on Broadway, the film's new songs.
  • Grease was re-released to theaters in 1998 (to mark its 20th anniversary) and 2010 (in a "sing-along" version) For the latter, the film was re-rated from PG to PG-13 due to "sexual content including references, teen smoking and drinking, and language".
  • In 2002, Grease was ranked #97 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years, 100 Passions" list.
  • In 2004, "Summer Nights" was ranked #70 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years, 100 Songs" list.
  • In 2006, Grease was ranked #20 on the American Film Institute's "Greatest Movie Musicals" list.
  • A 2012 episode of Glee, titled "Glease", centered on the McKinley High School production of Grease. A nine-track soundtrack of the episode was released on CD.
  • In 2016, the Fox Network aired a live, three-hour television production of Grease. The cast included Aaron Tveit as Danny, Julianne Hough as Sandy and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo.
