  • In 2002, Hairspray was adapted into a Broadway musical, with a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan and songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, the hit show won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and acting awards for all three Turnblads: Harvey Fierstein, Marissa Jaret Winokur and Dick Latessa.
  • Coming full circle, the stage musical itself was made as a movie, released in 2007.
