A Boeing 747 in flight collides with a small plane in the skies over Salt Lake City. Somehow the control tower must get a pilot aboard so the jet can land.

  • Golden Globe Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer - Female (Reddy).

  • The first sequel to the 1970 blockbuster hit Airport, which kick-started the disaster movie craze of the 1970s. Two more sequels followed, Airport '77 and The Concorde... Airport '79. George Kennedy, as Columbia Air Line's Vice President of Operations Joe Patroni, appeared in all four films.
  • Gloria Swanson, who played herself in this, her final screen appearance, wrote all her own dialogue. Her first film in 22 years, it reunited Swanson with her Sunset Boulevard co-star Nancy Olsen. Greta Garbo had been approached to play the "aging movie star" role, but flat out refused. 
  • Joan Crawford was approached to play the role of the matronly alcoholic. However, she refused and the character was played by Myrna Loy.
  • Derided by critics upon its release, Airport 1975 was nonetheless a massive commercial success. With a budget of $3 million, the film made over $47 million at the box office, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 1974.
  • Parodied on The Carol Burnett Show, in a sketch titled "Disaster '75", as well as the 1980 hit comedy Airplane!.
  • Included in the 1978 book The Fifty Worst Films of All Time. Also listed in Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson's book The Official Razzie Movie Guide as one of "The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made". Along with its fellow sequels Airport '77 and The Concorde... Airport '79, this film was inducted into the Razzie Awards' "Hall of Shame" in 1983.
