Notes/Trivia:
  • John Berendt's debut novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, was first published in 1994. At 216 weeks, it is the longest standing book on the New York Times bestseller list. The book's plot is based on real-life events that occurred in the 1980s and is classified as non-fiction.
  • Several changes were made from the book. Many of the more colorful characters were eliminated or made into composite characters. The reporter, played by John Cusack, was based upon the openly gay John Berendt, but was given a female love interest (played by Eastwood's daughter Alison). Also, the multiple trials in the book were combined into one on-screen trial.
  • Casting Call: Jack Nicholson, Edward Norton and Robert Redford.
  • Drag artist The Lady Chablis, who gained fame from being featured as a character in the novel, plays herself in the movie.
  • Final film of actress Dorothy Loudon.
