Synopsis:
On the eve of the French Revolution, the members of the court at the Palace of Versailles continue to live their usual carefree lives. But following the storming of the Bastille, Marie Antoinette turns to her devoted reader Sidonie Laborde with a daring plan for escape.

Notes/Trivia:
  • Chantal Thomas' best selling novel Les adieux à la reine (Farewell, My Queen), a fictionalized account of the last days of Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution of 1789, won the Prix Femina following its publication in 2002.
  • Director/co-writer Benoît Jacquot has said that he added the lesbian relationship between the Queen and the Duchess of Polignac because he thought "it might be possible, given women's strong relationships with each other in that time period".
