Synopsis:

  • David Mitchell's award-winning novel Cloud Atlas was first published in 2004. Mitchell makes a cameo appearance in the futuristic Korea section.
  • Casting Call: James McAvoy, Ian McKellen and Natalie Portman.
  • All of the actors play multiple roles in the story's six timelines: the Pacific Islands, 1849; Cambridge, England, 1936; San Francisco, California, 1973; London, England, 2012; Neo Seoul, Korea, 2144; and "Big Isle", 106 winters after "The Fall" (an unexplained apocalyptic event).
  • Produced with a $102 million budget provided by independent sources, Cloud Atlas is one of the most expensive independent films of all time.
  • One of the few films in history that had three directors working together as an original team who equally share directing credit. The Wachowskis directed the 1849, 2144 and 2321 segments of the film, while Tom Tykwer helmed the 1936, 1973 and 2012 segments.
