Notes/Trivia:
  • Gilbert Adair's 1988 novel The Holy Innocents was inspired by Jean Cocteau's novel Les Enfants Terribles (The Holy Terrors) and by the 1950 film of the same name. Adair makes a cameo appearance in the film.
  • Director Bernardo Bertolucci cut the script's homosexual content, including scenes from the novel that depict Matthew and Théo having sex, which he felt were "just too much."
  • Casting Call: Dominic Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jake Gyllenhaal.
  • Two versions of the film were released: an uncut NC-17-rated version, and an R-rated version that is about three minutes shorter.
