  • Berlin International Film Festival C.I.D.A.L.C. Award and Silver Berlin Bear Award.

  • A fictionalised re-telling of the life of Caravaggio, director Derek Jarman intentionally included several anachronisms in the film, such as electric lights, a typewriter and a motorbike. This was inspired by Caravaggio's use of contemporary dress for his Biblical figures in his paintings.
  • Film debut of actress Tilda Swinton, who would go on to act in seven more feature films directed by Derek Jarman, including War Requiem and Edward II.
  • Caravaggio is also the subject of a 1967 Italian television mini-series and a 2007 Italian made for TV movie, both also titled Caravaggio.
