  • Scott Thorson's memoir Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace was originally published in 1988, a year after Liberace's death.
  • In a New York Post interview, director Steven Soderbergh said that Behind the Candelabra was originally planned for a theatrical release but was turned down by all the Hollywood studios for being "too gay".

  • Although made to air on HBO in the United States, Behind the Candelabra premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or prize. It was released theatrical in Europe.
  • Scott Thorson was 17 years-old when he first met Liberace. Matt Damon was 42 at the time of filming.
  • The last film to feature a musical score by composer Marvin Hamlisch. The film is dedicated to him.
