Synopsis:

Notes/Trivia:
  • Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley first introduced the character of Tom Ripley, who returned in her subsequent novels Ripley Under Ground, Ripley's Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley and Ripley Under Water. The five novels are known collectively as the "Ripliad".
  • The novel was previously adapted for film in 1960 as Purple Noon (Plein soleil) starring Alain Delon as Tom Ripley.
  • Tom Ripley has also been played by Dennis Hopper in The American Friend (1977), John Malkovich in Ripley's Game (2002) and Barry Pepper in Ripley Under Ground (2005).
  • Casting Call: Christian Bale, Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio.
  • The opera seen in the film is Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. The title character in the opera is, like Tom Ripley, an attractive, charismatic and clever young man who aspires to be accepted by people of a higher social standing.
  • Tom kills one of his victims with a bust of Roman emperor Hadrian.
