Notes/Trivia:
  • The first feature film from Mainland China to deal with contemporary gay life.
  • After filming was completed, the Chinese government put director Yuan Zhang under house arrest and confiscated his passport. His friends smuggled the film out of the country for post-production in France so it could be shown at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
  • The title refers to the East Palace and the West Palace, two parks near the Forbidden City notorious for their public washrooms, nighttime cruise spots for Beijing gay men.
