Notes/Trivia:
  • Often compared to All About Eve, Showgirls has been alternately referred to as an unofficial remake, update, or rip-off of that film classic.
  • Casting Call: Pamela Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Finola Hughes, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Jenny McCarthy, Dylan McDermott, Denise Richards, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron and Sean Young.
  • The first NC-17 rated film to be given a wide release in mainstream theaters. To date, Showgirls is the highest-grossing NC-17 rated film.
  • Director Paul Verhoeven was the first "winner" to accept his Razzie Award in person. Showgirls holds the record for the most Razzie nominations, with 13. It is listed among the "Top Ten Best Bad Films Ever Made" in Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson's book The Official Razzie Movie Guide.
  • Despite its poor box office reception and horrendous reviews, Showgirls went on to become a huge success on the home video market, and is one of MGM's top 20 all-time bestsellers. Both the original NC-17 rated theatrical release and an R-rated cut are available on DVD.
  • Now classified as a "certified camp classic" and midnight movie favorite, Showgirls was ranked #36 on Entertainment Weekly's 2003 list of "The Top 50 Cult Movies".
  • The term "Showgirls-bad" has been adopted by film critics and moviegoers to refer to films considered guilty pleasures, or "so-bad-they're-good".
  • An unofficial spin-off/sequel, titled Showgirls 2: Penny's from Heaven, was released in 2011. It focuses on the minor Showgirls character Penny, played by Rena Riffel, who also wrote, produced and directed it.
  • In 2013, a stage musical parody/homage called Showgirls! The Musical premiered Off-Off-Broadway. Following an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and audiences, it moved to an Off-Broadway theater and a cast album was released. It featured such songs as "Fucking Underwater", "You're a Whore, Darlin'" and "Don't Lick That Pole, Girl".
