  • Ed Graczyk's play Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean was first produced in 1976. Robert Altman directed the play's Broadway debut in 1982. The film was made (with the entire Broadway cast reprising their roles) and released later that same year.
  • Director Robert Altman previously co-directed the 1957 documentary The James Dean Story.
  • Film debut of actor Mark Patton.
  • The film's American premiere (at the Chicago International Film Festival) was on September 30, 1982, the 28th anniversary of James Deans's death.
