  • Carson McCullers' novel Reflections in a Golden Eye was originally serialized in Harper's Bazaar in 1940 and published the following year. McCullers dedicated the book to her friend and unrequited love, Swiss journalist and travel writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach.
  • Montgomery Clift was originally cast as the impotent, latent homosexual Major Weldon Penderton, but he died on July 23, 1966 of a heart attack before production began. The role subsequently went to Marlon Brando, after Richard Burton and Lee Marvin had turned it down.
  • Film debuts of actors Robert Forster and Harvey Keitel (in an uncredited bit role as a soldier).
  • The film was originally released in a version in which all scenes were suffused with the color gold. This was in reference to the effeminate houseboy's drawing of a golden peacock, in whose eye the world is a mere reflection. As that version puzzled audiences, it was withdrawn and a normally colored version released. The DVD release features the original, color-suffused version.
