  • A send up of the classic "women's pictures" of the 1950s and 60s, John Waters specifically styled Polyester after the work of director Douglas Sirk, such as his All That Heaven Allows and Written on the Wind. To achieve this, Waters used similar lighting and editing techniques and even used film equipment from Sirk's era.
  • Originally screened in theaters in "Odorama", a gimmick whereby viewers could smell what they saw on screen with scratch and sniff cards that were handed out to each audience member. "Odorama" was inspired by "Smell-O-Vision", dreamed up by master showman William Castle for his 1960 movie Scent of Mystery.
  • The first John Waters film to be rated R; his previous films were all unrated or rated X.
