Notes/Trivia:
  • The title of the movie came from an autographed picture of Julie Newmar that screenwriter Douglas Carter Beane saw on the wall of a Times Square Chinese restaurant, the China Bowl, in the mid 1980s. Wong Foo, or "Fooey" as his friends called him, was the head bartender at the China Bowl (which closed in the 1993). The walls of the restaurant were covered with head shots of famous actors and actresses who had dined at the restaurant.
  • Casting Call: Mel Gibson, Viggo Mortensen and Gary Oldman.
  • Cameo appearances in the film include Joey Arias, The Lady Bunny, Naomi Campbell, Lady Catiria, Candis Cayne, Quentin Crisp, Hedda Lettuce, The Widow Norton, Miss Coco Peru, RuPaul, Miss Understood, Robin Williams and, of course, Julie Newmar.
  • Golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez won an undisclosed sum from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment after complaining that John Leguizamo's character shared his name. Rodriguez claimed that being linked to a gay character who dresses in drag had harmed his reputation.
