  • Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" was written in 1955 and published as part of his 1956 collection of poetry titled Howl and Other Poems. Ginsberg's debut performance of the poem at the Six Gallery Reading in 1955 was the first important public manifestation of the Beat Generation and helped to herald the West Coast literary revolution that became known as the San Francisco Renaissance.
  • The film also features characters based on Allen Ginsberg's fellow Beat poets Neal Cassady, Jack Kerouac and Peter Orlovsky.
