  • Sarah Waters' debut novel Tipping the Velvet was first published in 1998. Her subsequent novels, Affinity and Fingersmith, were also adapted for film. She makes a cameo appearance in the mini-series, as an audience member at one of the shows.
  • The title is an obscure Victorian pornographic slang reference to cunnilingus.
  • Originally broadcast in three parts on the UK television channel BBC.
