  • Feature film debut of writer/director Pedro Almodóvar. He has a cameo as the host of the "General Erections" contest.
  • The genesis of the film was a short story of Pedro Almodóvar's titled General Erections, a comic parody of the 1977 general elections in Spain that was published in the magazine El Víbora (The Viper) in 1978.
  • With its many kitsch elements, campy style, outrageous humor and open sexuality, the film became emblematic of La Movida Madrileña, a Spanish cultural movement of its time. It also earned Pedro Almodóvar the reputation as the "Spanish John Waters".
  • Pepi, Luci, Bom wasn't released in the United States until 1992, after Pedro Almodóvar became known in America for such art house hits as Law of Desire and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
