Gay teenager Hubert has a caustic relationship with his overburdened mother. They grapple with the notion that although they can't seem to live together, they're not sure they can live apart.

  • Writing and directing debut of the then-20 year old Xavier Dolan, who wrote the script when he was 16 years old and has said that it is semi-autobiographical.
  • The title refers to Hubert lying to his teacher that his mother has died. After the teacher finds out that it is a lie, she expresses this lie as "you killed your mother". This inspires Hubert to write an essay for school titled "I Killed My Mother".
  • After being shown at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, the movie received an eight-minute standing ovation.
  • Canada's official submission for the 2010 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.
