Notes/Trivia:
  • La Cage aux Folles literally means "the cage of mad women". "Folles" is also a French slang term for effeminate homosexuals.
  • The original French play ran in Paris from 1973 to 1978 for close to 1,800 performances.
  • Unlike many other non-English-language films, the original cast did most of the film's dubbing into English.
  • For several years La Cage aux Folles was the number one foreign film to be released in the United States.
  • In 1979, an American television adaptation, titled Adam and Yves, was in development for ABC, but was never produced.
  • Adapted into the stage musical La Cage aux Folles, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and book by Harvey Fierstein. Its original 1983 Broadway production, produced by Allan Carr and directed by Arthur Laurents, was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning six, including Best Musical.  It was subsequently revived on Broadway twice, in 2004 and 2010, winning Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival both times. This makes it the only musical to win the Best Musical Revival Tony twice and the only show that has won a Best Production Tony Award (Best Musical or Best Musical Revival) for each of its Broadway productions.
  • La Cage aux Folles was released on DVD and Blu-ray as part of The Criterion Collection in 2013.
