  • Based on the stage musical The Rocky Horror Show, which premiered in London in 1973 and ran for over 2,000 performances. A short-lived Broadway run in 1975 was followed by a popular, Tony Award nominated revival in 2000, which starred Tom Hewitt, Raúl Esparza and Lea DeLaria.
  • Tim Curry, Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell (a.k.a. Little Nell) recreated the roles they originated in the original London production, which was also directed by Jim Sharman. Curry and O'Brien also starred in the original Broadway production, along with Meat Loaf as both Eddie and Dr. Scott.
  • Tim Curry's film debut.
  • Casting Call: Mick Jagger, Steve Martin and Vincent Price.
  • A box office flop upon its initial release, The Rocky Horror Picture Show found an enthusiastic audience once it started screening at midnight showings. Enhanced by elaborate "stage shows" performed by enthusiastic local fans, complete with costumes, props and audience participation, RHPS is still in limited release and, as the longest-running theatrical release in film history, is commonly considered the king of "cult movies".
  • Ranked #2 on Entertainment Weekly's 2003 list of "The Top 50 Cult Movies".
  • Shock Treatment, a pseudo-sequel which also starred Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell and Charles Gray in different roles, followed in 1981.
  • Rocky Horror fandom was the subject of the 2000 documentary A Regular Frankie Fan.
  • In 2005, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was inducted into the National Film Registry.
  • In 2008, MTV planned a television version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but the project was ultimately cancelled.
  • In a 2010 second season episode of Glee, titled "The Rocky Horror Glee Show", the New Directions Glee Club performed their own version of the stage musical. Some of the song lyrics were changed ostensibly due to the show's high school setting; for example, "I'm a sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania" became "I'm a sweet transvestite from sensational Transylvania". RHPS cast members Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf made cameo appearances in the episode. A seven track soundtrack of the episode was released on CD.
  • Adult film company Wicked Pictures released the multiple-AVN Award winner Rocki Whore Picture Show: A Hardcore Parody in 2011. However, they changed the sex of the monster created by their "Franks N. Beans" to a woman and named her "Roki Whore".
  • The Fox Network has announced a "Rocky Horror Picture Show Event" that will be directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega of High School Musical fame.
  • To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the BBC aired Rocky Horror Show Live, a filmed performance at London’s Playhouse Theatre. David Bedella starred as Frank N. Furter and Richard O'Brien appeared as one of a rotating string of "guest narrators" that also included Stephen Fry, Anthony Head (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) and Emma Bunton (a.k.a. Ginger Spice of the Spice Girls).
