Notes/Trivia:
  • Based on the long-running stage musical Rent, which was inspired by Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème. The original 1996 Broadway production won the Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won four, for Best Musical, Book, Score and Featured Actor for Wilson Jermaine Heredia. 
  • Rent creator Jonathan Larson died suddenly the night before the 1996 Off-Broadway premiere of the show.
  • Potential Directors: Spike Lee, Baz Luhrmann, Rob Marshall, Sam Mendes and Martin Scorsese.
  • Casting Call: Frenchie Davis and Jennifer Hudson.
  • Six of the eight main cast members — Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Jesse L. Martin, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs — recreated their roles from the original stage production for the film.
  • Although the film is set in 1989, Angel references the 1991 movie Thelma & Louise in the song "Today 4 U".
  • Director Chris Columbus has a cameo appearance in the film as the annoyed driver getting his windshield washed.
  • Tracie Thoms went on to play Joanne on Broadway through the show's final performance, which was filmed for Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway, released theatrically in 2008.
