Synopsis:
After a botched sex-change operation, East German glam rocker Hansel becomes Hedwig and travels across the United States with a stage show, following her ex-boyfriend and telling her life story.

Notes/Trivia:
  • The original Off-Broadway production won a Village Voice Obie Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.
  • John Cameron Mitchell performed as Hedwig on Rosie O'Donnel's daytime talk show during the stage musical's original Off-Broadway production; a clip of his appearance is used in the film.
  • Most of the lead vocals were recorded live as the scenes were shot, to capture the intensity of a live performance.
  • Fans of the play and film refer to themselves as "Hedheads".
  • A charity tribute album, titled Wig in a Box, was released by Off Records in 2003. Performers who covered songs from the musical included Cyndi Lauper, Yoko Ono, Fred Schneider and Rufus Wainwright. The profits from the album benefitted The Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School, a New York City public school for GLBT youth. The documentary Follow My Voice: With the Music of Hedwig documents the making of the album.
  • Hedwig and the Angry Inch made it's Broadway debut in 2014 starring Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig. The production won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Harris. Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and John Cameron Mitchell himself took over as Hedwig following Harris' departure from the show.
  • Other notable actors who have played Hedwig on stage include Kevin Cahoon, Michael Cerveris, iOTA, Matt McGrath, Jinkx Monsoon, Anthony Rapp and even actress Ally Sheedy.
  • In 2014, John Cameron Mitchell confirmed that he and Stephen Trask were working on a sequel to the stage musical.
